Swim with Epic and Speedo!

We know that once kids have learned to swim, they just love to swim!

We also understand that children learn at their own pace, and some are more comfortable in the water than others. We at Epic want to change that.Through our long-standing association with Speedo, we are able to offer a range of programmes designed to support children of all abilities to improve their competency in the water. Speedo provide generous funding suppport for our various programmes, and have previously arranged for our children to meet legends such as Rebecca Adlington (right). We would struggle to do this without their support, so hats off to Speedo!

We work with schools to ensure that children achieve the standard set by the national curriculum, by offering intensive training that is designed to supplement the school's own provision. You can find out more about how we support our local schools below.

School Swimming

In 2011 Epic received support from Speedo to develop and deliver a swimming project for children. The aim of the project was to give the most gifted and talented swimmers in the area of St Ann's and Sneinton with the chance to develop their swimming skills and technique. It soon became apparent, however, that the majority of children in the area do not swim often enough to enable them to competently swim 25m. Epic's response was to focus on teaching children how to swim, giving birth to our "Epic Child A Swimmer" programme to ensure that every local child learns to swim 25m before they leave primary school.

The programme has been so successful since it's inception 8 years ago that it has attracted further support and funding from Boots and the Angus Lawson Memorial Trust (who also support the St Ann's and Sneinton Football Club).

Epic Sharks

This programme has become a firm favourite in our portfolio of activities, and has expanded over recent years due to its popularity!

Epic sharks is a youth swimming session, where children can develop their swimming skills, techniques, and improve their confidence in the water, under the guidance of qualified and experienced coaches, run at the Victoria Leisure centre in Sneinton.

For children that show talent and ability, we signpost them to established swimming clubs where their skills can be further nurtured and developed.

Through the programme, we also encourage children to attend public swimming sessions by removing barriers such as cost, transport, and the support of a qualified instructor, to go in the pool with the children.

Case Study

When H, aged 12, first attended the Epic Sharks, he was not a confident swimmer; he lacked self-confidence and self-belief. His first 2 swimming sessions involved the coach walking up and down the pool with him, he stopped numerous times before reaching the end. Over the next 6 weeks the coach worked with H, building his confidence, developing his swimming technique and breathing. After just 8 weeks H was able to swim 850m in 40 minutes!!

“She can’t wait for the next session, she gets her kit ready days in advance!” Parent of Epic sharks participant

“I love swimming with Chan, it’s fun and we have a laugh learning to swim.” Participant aged 10

Epic Sharks is open to all children aged between 8 and 12 that reside in the local community.
